Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting loose diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to various neghbourhood locations to look for rough gemstones. First off you'll need the knowledge on each of the gemstones out there. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.
The first item to take into account will be the color of the gemstone. You'll want the gemstone to be as close in color as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. We are talking about orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. The prices of very dark are very pale stones are lower.
The cut of your gemstone is an important aspect to consider when you consider a gemstone's value. The stone has to be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A stone that has a poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. The color hue, color tone and saturation will never be consistent.
The clarity in a stone is our next factor. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A flawless gemstone is more valuable. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye requires a 10X gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Most hobbyists will employ a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.
Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.
Collecting gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. Now corundum is a fairly common mineral. Second only to diamond in hardness it
has been mined extensively for abrasives. The emery on your emery boards and
sand paper is corundum. Gem quality corundum is quite a bit rarer, consisting of
