The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

At the very beginning you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Highly prized gemstones have colors that are close in pureness to the spectral colors of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are muted or too dark lowers the value per carat.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but along with your gemstones. A precision cut gemstone highlights the pure color of the stone, diminish any inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way of determining the excellence of gemstone cut is to consider how evenly it reflects light throughout its surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting inside the gemstone. Gemstone color will be washed out.

Gemstone clarity is an important consideration. When we talk of clarity it relates to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. A gemstones that is normally found to be clean is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Many hobbyists will buy a 10X jewelers were gemstone loup for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet. And in Canada you can find nephrite jade in Cry Lake, British Columbia or amethyst near Thunder Bay, Ontario and even amethyst from Nova Scotia. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

There are a lot of different trade names for opals, but the most recognized and
widely used is the precious and common opal. Even though the opal is brittle and
can break quite easily, and is prey to scratches and heat it remains high on the
list of gemstone collectors. The reason is that opals are truly beautiful. Its.
beauty fascinated earlier cultures. Some even believed it fell from heaven. The
birthstone of October is the opal and in the 19th century those who were
superstitious believed that only those born in that month should wear opals.
Anyone else wearing one was supposed to have run the risk of having bad luck or
running into a dire fate.

Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we show you the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

First off you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This will help you to know what you're buying and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.

One of the first things you look at is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder exhibit colors similar to the exact spectral color of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or on the dark side can lower the value.

Gemstone cut is easily one of the most important aspects when evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A stone that has a poor cut will never be able to reflect light consistently. The hue, tone and color saturation will always appear inconsistent

Our next consideration is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Any large flaws can be seen with the naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can be very enjoyable and also rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt the quartz regions in Yellowdine Lake in Western Australia.

Citrine is one of the most affordable gemstones due to its availability and durability. It ranks 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. It was named from the French word for lemon, citron, since many citrines have a bright sunny yellow color. It also comes in hues of gold to orange brown shades. In ancient times, citrine was carried as a protection against snake venom and evil thoughts. Natural citrine deposits are mined mostly in Brazil, but also in Malagasy Republic, the U.S., Spain, Russia, France and Scotland. Citrine should be kept away from prolonged exposure to strong light or heat which can damage or fade the stone. Citrine is considered an alternative to topaz as the birthstone for November.

The 1370-carat Neelanjali Star Ruby has been listed in the Guinness Book of
World Records as the largest double star ruby in the world. The enormous star
ruby of Indian origin belongs to the retired lawyer G. Vidyaraj who lives in
Bangalore, India, and claims his descent from the kings of the Vijayanagar
Empire. Vidyaraj inherited the Neelanjali Ruby and the other enormous rubies,
the 3,553-carat Ravirathna Ruby and the 2,475-carat Rajarathna Ruby from his
father, who had inherited them from his ancestors who were direct descendants of
the Vijayanagar royal family. In fact neither Vidyarajs father or his ancestors
would have been aware that they were in possession of such enormously large
rubies, as the large rough stones were actually sacred objects of worship known
as lingams, the symbols of Shiva, called Saligramas. Over the years these
objects of worship were covered with layers of grime and soot, and their bright
red colors concealed. No one would dare touch these objects for fear of
desecration, and the secret of the stones remained hidden for centuries, until
Vidyaraj who was not much inclined towards religion, out of curiosity began to
investigate the nature of the stones, by cleaning them with soap and brush. To
his utter amazement the bright red color of the stones were exposed, which were
subsequently identified as rubies.

Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the various gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

To start off right you need to read up on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone so you buy the right items. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones are valued much higher they closer they are to natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They are valued much less the more they deviate from the spectral color.

How a stone has been cut is the second most important value determination to consider before buying. The precision of the cut will determine how much light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will fully factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

The next factor to consider is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This means the gemstones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Next comes size and weight. Other than the corals and pearls gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Wyoming you can find Agate (including Moss Agate), Jade, Ruby, Jasper, Bloodstone as well as Star Sapphire. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or sodalite and rose quartz near Bancroft, Ontario as well as the unique deep blue beryl in Canada's Yukon Territory. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

Hints On loose faceted gemstones

The precious opal has a unique internal structure. It is made up of spheres that
are closely packed in layers that eventually form something that looks like a
four-sided triangle or a hexagon. They are made up of silica that allows light
to pass through the structure like a prism to produce internal colors, and it
also determines the quality of the stone. A precious opal has a doublet which is
a colorful material laid on a black backing of ironstone, basalt or obsidian.
This causes "a play of color" which produces a spectrum of different colors.

Topaz can be found in streams, rivers and in gravel deposits. It is found mainly
in gem pegmatites where the presence of fluorine can be found. Flourine provides
a rich environment for the stones to grow into very large crystals. In fact,
without the presence of Flourine topaz would not exist. Topaz crystallizes
orthorhombically and develops columns with square and diamond shapes planes with
multisurfaced heads. Topaz can also be found in cracks and cavities where a
combination of Flourine and silica and alumina which was released by very hot
temperatures caused the gems to form. Chromium Oxide is what provides its
beautiful color.
