Sapphire has been mined in Australia for over 100 years and Australian mines
have produced commercial quantities for at least 50 years. For several decades
recognition of the quality and quantity of sapphire produced in Australia has
been concealed by many international vested interests in an effort to control
the supply and price of sapphire gems. As a result the best Australian sapphire
has often been sold as being "Ceylon" or "Thai" material and this has concealed
the very high quality and outstanding colour range of Australian Material.

Clarity refers to the amount of inclusions or impurities there are in a stone.
If you can see through the stone with an unobstructed view of the bottom facets
called the pavilion), it is a clear stone. Inclusions are usually another
mineral that has been trapped inside the crystal as it was forming. Clarity is
also affected by internal cracks. Generally speaking, the clearer the stone, the
more valuable it is.

In the 1950's the Gemological Institute of America established a system for
grading diamonds based on the four C's. This was a great asset to the diamond
community and it became the standard for grading world wide. While the system
for grading color and clarity removed most redundancies, the standards for
grading the cut left something to be desired. That is not necessarily a
criticism of the GIA; no one has been able to establish a simple a usable system
that would cover all the variables involved.

We all know that cubic zirconias and other gemstone simulants can be substituted for the real thing, but did you know that supposed "real" gemstones can actually be layers of the real thing AND fakes? Unscrupulous wholesalers have found ways to fuse real gemstones to a base of a similar but fake mineral or man-made substance in an effort to trick less than careful stone buyers. Buyers who don't thoroughly test stones can miss these "doublets" and "triplets" - named for the number of layers fused together - and pass these stones on to the public in ignorance. So when buying an unusually expensive gemstone, it is always a good idea to question your jeweler to be sure they have thoroughly examined the stone to rule out these fakes. Some jewelry are made with doublet and triplets - opal jewelry and birthstone jewelry in particular - and this is considered appropriate to industry standards because they are not represented incorrectly or sold for more than they are worth. But when buying a high-quality, expensive sapphire or other colored stone, buying from a reputable jeweler is the safest way to go.

Weighing 138.7 carats, the Rosser Reeves Ruby is one of the world's largest and
finest star rubies. This Sri Lankan stone is renowned for its great color and
well-defined star pattern. Advertising mogul Rosser Reeves, who donated the
piece to the Smithsonian in 1965, carried it around as a lucky stone, referring
to it as his baby. He often stated that he had acquired the stone at an auction
in Istanbul in the mid-1950s. He actually bought the stone from Robert C. Nelson
Jr. of New York who was acting on behalf of Firestone & Parson of Boston.
Firestone & Parson were selling the stone for Mr. Paul Fisher of New York. Mr.
Robert Fisher, Paul's father, had bought the ruby at an auction in London in
1953. At the time the ruby then weighed just over 140 carats, but was very
heavily scratched, and a few carats were removed in the repolishing. The
repolishing also helped to center the stone's star. Articles in the New York
World-Telegram and The Sun in 1953 mentioned this fabulous gemstone.
