Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to travel to different areas to look for rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you then follow along as we reveal the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

To start off right you need to read up on the various gemstones available. This will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. A knowledgeable buyer is a wise one.

Number one to look at is the color of the gem. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close to the purest spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or on the dark side lowers the value per carat.

The cut of the gemstone is an important aspect to consider when you value gemstone. The stone has to be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with the poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will never be consistent.

Gemstone clarity is the next item to consider. When we talk of clarity it relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. The gemstone without flaws is definitely worth much more. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference regarding relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Look at each stone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or Tourmaline from Chatham Twonship, Quebec along with the unique deep blue beryl in Canada's Yukon Territory. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

Tips On inexpensive loose diamonds

Zircon is brittle and therefore sensitive to knocks and pressure. The gem has
the tendency to wear along facet edges. Its use in rings should therefore be
limited to protective settings or occasional wear jewelry. Zircon jewelry should

Rubies and sapphires are different colored varieties of the mineral corundum.
Now corundum is a fairly common mineral. Second only to diamond in hardness it
has been mined extensively for abrasives. The emery on your emery boards and
sand paper is corundum. Gem quality corundum is quite a bit rarer, consisting of
only a percent or so of all the corundum found. The most common of the gem grade
corundum is blue sapphire. Sapphire comes in every color of the rainbow and the
other colors are rarer than the blues. This may be a bit of a surprise as the
blue ones are so valuable. However, the law of supply and demand comes in here.
Most of the people wanting a sapphire are looking for a deep blue gemstone, not
something yellow or green. Hot pink sapphires and the pinkish orange variety
know as padparasha do demand a high price in the market place. Generally though,
it is the demand for blue gems that fuels the pricing here.
